== Characteristics == Peppermint is an herbaceous, rhizomatous perennial plant that grows to a height of 30β90 cm (12β35 in)<ref>https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peppermint</ref>. It has smooth, square stems and dark green leaves with reddish veins, which are coarsely toothed and slightly fuzzy<ref>https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peppermint</ref>. The plant thrives in moist habitats, such as stream sides and drainage ditches, and spreads quickly through its runners<ref>https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peppermint</ref>. As a hybrid, peppermint is usually sterile and reproduces vegetatively, making it challenging to propagate via seeds<ref>https://avogel.com/plant-encyclopaedia/mentha_x_piperita.php</ref>. It prefers loose, humus-rich soil in sunny locations and can grow up to elevations of about 1000 meters<ref>https://avogel.com/plant-encyclopaedia/mentha_x_piperita.php</ref>. <span id="why-is-this-crop-useful-for-space"></span>
